Design and construction of 11 concrete buoys for the Hywing Tampen floating wind farm

Wind Services

Upon completion and commissioning of the investment, this will be the largest floating wind farm in the world. The operator of the project is a Norwegian energy company, Equinor ASA, which is present in more than 30 countries.

Wind Services

Upon completion and commissioning of the investment, this will be the largest floating wind farm in the world. The operator of the project is a Norwegian energy company, Equinor ASA, which is present in more than 30 countries.

The challenge

Hywind Tampen floating wind farm will be located in the North Sea, approx. 140 km from the shore, between Snorre and Gullfaks oil rigs. The installation will consist of 11 wind turbines (the diameter of the turbine rotor is 167 m), settled on Spar-type buoys, anchored to the sea floor with ropes and chains. The sea floor depth in the vicinity of the wind farm is 260 – 300 m. The total power of the installation will be 88 MW, reducing annual CO2 emissions by 200k tonnes.

DOMINION's +

DOMINION was responsible for the provision of cylindrical and conical slip formwork including experienced slipform operators as well as supervision and coordination of works. Due to the complexity of the project, the works were carried out in four stages. After finishing the foundation slab and the erection of 20m cylindrical walls, the next stage of construction was carried out in the floating dock in Dommersnes, approx. 25 km away from the previous location. The structures were moored to floating barges that provided constant access to the land on one side.

After erection of the walls up to the level of +66m, the cylindrical formwork sets were transferred to further structures. At the last stage the working system was changed from the cylindrical formwork to the conical formwork. The conical slip formwork is a unique system which allows to achieve the effect of narrowing of walls during constant concreting without the need to stop or reconstruct the system.

The last phase of works will consist of towing of the reinforced concrete buoys to the floating dock in Gulen, where the wind turbines will be assembled.

Results

After completion of the project, Hywind Tampen will be the largest floating wind farm in the world. In addition to the ultimate goal of the venture, the reduction of the emission of greenhouse gases to the atmosphere, the project is an essential step in industrialising solutions and reducing costs for future offshore wind power projects.

The ambitious climate objectives require ambitious projects, which are implemented thanks to the best technical solutions provided by DOMINION.

DOMINION is one of the few companies that has the slip-formed formwork technology and qualified personnel to meet the implementation of large offshore wind farm projects.
