More efficient production processes in Oman

10 / 05 / 2018

On March 31st, 2018, DOMINION completed its three-year contract for comprehensive technical assistance and construction supervision services for the turnkey project of the new hydrocarbons storage terminal and the associated multiproduct pipeline network in Oman.

The project, called MSPP (Muscat-Sohar Products Pipeline), is an investment of the business association formed by the Oman refining operator Oman Refineries and Petroleum Industries Company (ORPIC) and the Spanish Compañía Logística de Hidrocarburos (CLH), which includes the turnkey construction of a new storage terminal in Jifnain, near the capital Muscat, with a capacity of more than 170,000 cubic meters; DOMINION's roll in the project has consisted in the assistance to the project management, planning and control, as well as the supervision of the construction works.

The project presents a total of 290km of pipeline network including a 10-inch, 45-km long multi-product, that runs from the Muscat refinery to the terminal; another one of 220km long and 18 inches, from the Sohar refinery to the terminal, and a last one of 10 inches and 25km long for airplane fuel, from the terminal to the new international airport of Muscat.

As a complement to the previous infrastructure, the new terminal is equipped with 16 loading arms with a capacity to fill 700 tankers a day with different products to be transported to the gas stations in the country.

An entrenchment project

For DOMINION is the first project of its kind in Oman, which has strengthened its position in the Middle East, where it has been present for more than 20 years, offering industrial services and solutions in the areas of electromechanical construction, coatings, gas infrastructure, vertical structures and storage tanks in activities ranging from the integral management of projects, to tasks of planning, control and supervision of construction.

The MSPP project, which began in early 2015 with an opening ceremony in which Salvador Guillén (Head of CLH) and Musab Al Mahruqi (CEO of ORPIC) laid the first stone of the project, will distribute more than 50% of Oman's hydrocarbons, ensuring the supply of fuel to the population and the international airport of Muscat. DOMINION, faithful to its DNA, contributes in this project to make production processes more efficient by guaranteeing the security of supply through the oil pipeline network, minimizing the risk of failures, maximizing the automation of the operation, and at the same time, decongesting traffic very noticeably in the capital.

On the other hand, the oil pipeline directed to the airport prepares the expansion and development of the new international airport of Muscat, thanks to the direct supply of fuel from the terminal and without the need for tankers, which increases the availability of airplane fuel at the destination.
