DOMINION at the forefront of technology applied to the healthcare sector

28 / 11 / 2023

It was only a matter of time before many technological advances in the field of medicine, such as telemedicine not long ago or Artificial Intelligence (AI) in recent times, turned theory into reality.

After the COVID-19 pandemic, the health sector faced a difficult situation in which the use of technology became a regular and essential companion on which to rely to overcome all its challenges. As a result of growing health demands, most health technology (MedTech) companies are driving the growth of innovation in technology and its application in the healthcare environment.

One of the most relevant keys of MedTech companies is innovation. It is important to constantly work on the development of new technological solutions that allow healthcare professionals to adapt to today's world, improving people's quality of life. Therefore, as a global projects and comprehensive services company, at DOMINION we believe in technology as an engine of change and process improvement, and one of the most beneficiaries is the health sector.

Rise of 'telemedicine' and AI

In recent years, we have witnessed the rise of telemedicine as a virtual care system. According to the survey carried out by WTW “2021 Global Medical Trends”, Telemedicine is offered by almost half of insurers (49%) in the Middle East and Africa, followed by 46% in Latin America. In Asia Pacific they report that 31% of them offer this service in full, but 36% offer it for selected plans.

Medical institutions in private and public sectors are aware of their need to adapt quickly to the new global panorama. Thanks to telemedicine, there are numerous advantages that are transforming healthcare and the way it is understood, including the possibility of improving the diagnosis of various diseases, obtaining greater efficiency in treatment of patients and thereby improving their quality of life.

On the other hand, AI is demonstrating its incredible potential and application in all areas. As a matter of fact, its application in medical imaging equipment has proven to have greater precision when detecting tumors, greater speed and quality in the reconstruction of images, thus allowing less exploration and exposure time for patients. This enables greater resilience to healthcare challenges and increased performance through modernized technology.

Our experience in the healthcare sector

At DOMINION we believe that the application of innovative technologies such as AI or telemedicine must be carried out in a comprehensive manner in conjunction with the technological infrastructure and digital framework where it will be used. This, to ensure aspects such us availability, digital security and data protection.

Likewise, it is important to identify from the initial technical design the possible effects of the technology implementation and the possible changes in activity processes so as to ensure the adequate use that responds to the service's specific needs.

Knowing the potential, the benefits and the possible risks of technological innovation in all fields and thanks to our extensive experience developing end-to-end projects in the healthcare industry, we continually seek ways to ensure and optimize each process to benefit the customer and future patients. An example of this is the use of AI-based diagnostic image reconstruction algorithms in health equipment installed, in operation and currently under maintenance by DOMINION such as the Magnetic Resonator at the Antofagasta Hospital in Chile.

These AI-based algorithms improve image quality by suppressing noise and artifacts, and allow shorter reconstruction times, achieving a decrease of up to 20% in the times of each MRI study report, benefiting patients with shorter exam times and allowing the hospital to care for more patients.

Another example is the identification and design of the technology configuration of the medical equipment of the Concession of the new Buin Paine Hospital in Chile, currently in construction stage.

As we already did in the Antofagasta hospital, DOMINION is working on the procurement and integration of the most innovative health equipment and technologies tailored to the specific needs of the hospital, with a comprehensive, long-term vision and with the aim of optimizing efficiency of the solution as a whole. The implementation and integration of these technologies, such as AI and telemedicine, are always done while maintaining the security, availability and protection of data, so important to maintain efficiency during the operation of a hospital.

Since we live in a constantly changing world, we cannot predict how far AI and other technologies will go, but we can ensure that we will provide all our experience to apply, adapt and facilitate these challenging technological changes to turn them into opportunities and beneficial changes for all our customers.
